Cross Cultural Understanding
Date Attended: 2/27/2018
Leader of Colloquium: Penelope Pynes
In the Global Leadership Program, this colloquia was designated to help participates development intercultural competence towards all cultures. Intercultural competence is a set of skills which can aid you in adjusting to any culture standards or beliefs. It was interesting to learn about how you can still hold your identity and culture as a person but still be flexible in terms of cultures which are different from yours. During my time in England, I was presented with these challenges and this knowledge was helpful in terms of giving light to why I had trouble adjusting to cultural differences. I was able to identify where I was on this spectrum. (for more information on my results and what they meant refer to the IDI results section). This colloquium helped me to further understand that process of intercultural competence and how you are to develop it as a global leader.
In relation to goals I have set, intercultural understanding is very important. My short term goal of obtaining a paralegal job will require an intercultural mindset as I will deal with clients of many backgrounds and have to establish a sense of empathy and understanding toward them with a sense of respect and integrity. This global mindset will also be crucial in achieving my goal of attending Law School as adaption to varying environments will be necessary.
